Frequently asked questions

Can we bring our dog?

Yes. However, as you are guests in a protected nature reserve, your dog must remain on a leash if you stop to explore the shoreline.

Can we put more than 2 people in a canoe?

Yes. A canoe has space in the middle for one adult or two children to sit on the floor as passengers.

Can we put more than 1 person in a kayak?

No. Our kayaks are single sit-inside models with no room for a second occupant. If you would like multiple people in one vessel, a canoe is your best option.

Can I bring toddlers or an infant with me?

Yes. However, we only provide life jackets for toddler-aged children and above (30 lbs minimum). You must bring an appropriately sized life jacket for an infant.

Do we need to consider the tides?

No. Our boats service a portion of the river above the tidal zone, so it is not affected by tide movements.

Is there a strong current?

Current strength depends on the river's water level. The current is strongest in the spring when water levels are highest, and gentlest in late summer and early fall when levels are lower.

Can we swim?

Yes. The Ipswich River is very clean, with much of its water feeding local reservoirs. You are welcome to swim anywhere you can safely get in and out of your boat.

Where do we park?

Parking is along the road at our Willowdale facility on Topsfield Rd in Ipswich. This is the launch point for our Willowdale Run, as well as the return point for our upstream shuttle drop-off services (Salem Run or Thunder Bridge Run).

Can you accommodate individuals with physical disabilities?

Yes, we can accommodate individuals with varying degrees of physical disabilities. We encourage you to call and discuss your options with our knowledgeable staff.

Can I use my own life jacket or paddle?

Yes. Personal equipment is welcome, though paddles and life jackets are included with your vessel rental.

Do you provide river guildelines?

No. Exploring the Ipswich River is a self-guided experience and does not require a guide. Our staff will happily ensure you are familiar and comfortable with the equipment before you set out.

Can we book a school or large group?

Yes. We service many schools and educational groups throughout the area. If you would like to learn more about group bookings, please call our staff to discuss your options.
